Carefully choosing the bug out bag contents can spell the difference between lasting out for a few hours to a few days. Also referred to as a BOB, a battle box or a grab bag, the contents can help individuals last for 72 hours in the event that you may need to evacuate your home.

When deciding what to place or include inside the bag, there are a few factors that need to be considered. One is determining the possible disasters in the area that would encourage an evacuation to take place.

Also worth thinking about is the terrain of the area and the climate where you will be evacuating. Other factors include possible security issues and any personal skills you may have that can be beneficial.

A BOB is personal. As such, do not expect to find anybody else to have the exact same bug out bag contents as yours.

When planning out your bug out bag contents, consider the types of disasters that would permit the need to evacuate your home. It is good to be ready for any type of danger but understanding the locale, the climate and possible dangers can make easier to plan what to pack.

For instance, if the area is known for hurricanes then it would be unwise to pack items for a snowstorm. Remember to consider the terrain as well.

You may need more protection from the elements when evacuating in the nearby woods as compared to evacuating to a building in the city. The possible dangers you might encounter during the evacuation also varies depending on the area.

When surrounded by stagnant water, it may be worth considering carrying bug repellent for protection against mosquitoes and other types of bugs. Regardless of where you live, there are a few essentials that need to be included in the BOB.

One is water. Different regions have varying recommendations.

In the United States, the minimum is at least a gallon a day while the suggested amount in Canada is only half that amount. When planning to be out for three days, this can mean bringing at least 3 gallons.

One way around it is carrying pans for boiling water, investing in a water filter or packing in iodine capsules. Pack durable pants and shirts good for three days and avoid jeans as these can get heavy when wet.

Also remember to pack food good for three days. Consider pre-packaged meals or energy bars to keep it light.

Bringing a tarp, rope, a multipurpose knife, a bandana, matches and flashlights is also essential as these items have varying purposes depending on the situation or need. For people that are taking any medications, it is worth including those as well.

Considering what to include as part of the bug out bag contents is personal. Several factors such as the terrain of the evacuation area, climate and possible dangers can help people determine what they need to pack inside their BOB.

However, only time can tell if the bug out bag you have packed is right for the situation.
